JOB DESCRIPTION

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Belmont Boulevard Christian Church

The Membership Committee shall, as all other committees, develop at its initial meeting a statement of purpose which seeks to relate the work of the committee to the wider ministry of the church. This purpose is to be shared with the congregation and remain as the guiding principle for all activities for this committee.

The Membership Committee is particularly responsible for:

The Membership Committee shall prepare a detailed budget to present to the Stewardship Committee in August and be ready to present that same budget to the congregation at the annual meeting in October. The job description update is due in November; and the Annual Report is due in December.

The first meeting of the new committee (January) should be a planning session for the year. As soon as a person(s) is lined up to be committee chairman they should start working on getting the committee lined up. The following are some items to consider at the first meeting of the New Year:

1. Appoint a person to be responsible for obtaining the rosebud for new babies. The rosebud is purchased and placed in the refrigerator in the sacristy on Saturday and it is then placed on the communion table when the elements are put out. A note needs to be given to the lead elder for the day giving him/her the baby’s name, parents name, birth date, etc..If the parents are not in church on that Sunday, the rosebud should be delivered to their home and/or hospital the same day.

2. Appoint a person to take pictures of new members and place them on the board provided for that purpose. The Polaroid camera belongs to the church. The picture should be taken the day the family joins or the date when young people come forward to make their confession.

3. Appoint someone to give the new family a new-member packet on the day they join. If a young person joins whose family is already a part of the church we do not give them a packet. This person should explain briefly what is to be found in the packet.

4. Extra packets are kept in the storage cabinet. Someone on the committee needs to keep these up-to-date and make sure there are several made up ahead at all times. Updating consists of placing the current membership list, annual report, pictorial directory and CWF book in the packets. Other materials are continuous.

5. A new pictorial directory every three years. See the separate file for more information on this. Planning should be started by January of the year a directory is to be done.

6. Someone needs to be appointed to be the recording secretary for the committee to prepare minutes of meetings and make the report at board meetings. Minutes should be made in duplicate. The original goes to the board secretary and the carbon copy goes in the notebook.

7. By January Board Meeting - set up the monthly Fellowship Program for the coming year.

January All church dinner; Souper Bowl Sunday

February Chili feed after church; Bingo and pancakes

March Bowling league starts

April Breakfast after sunrise service on Easter

May Graduation recognition

June New member recognition

August All church dinner, VBS fellowship

September Mission Conservation Dinner

October All church dinner

November Thanksgiving dinner

December Christmas Program and refreshments - caroling

8. This committee is also responsible for the Dinner for Eight Program. There is a separate file on this program.

9. During the October meeting final plans should be discussed for the turkey dinner. There is a separate file on this dinner. Start publicity about turkey dinner in November.

10. During the November meeting discuss when to run article in Beacon about a Christmas love offering for the minister and whoever else deemed appropriate. This is generally presented the Sunday before Christmas so it needs to be run several weeks ahead to give people time to turn in their donations to a member of this committee and then it is to be turned over to the church financial secretary.

11. The Budget Report is due in August.

12. A job description is due in November.

13. During the month of November start thinking about the coming year. Begin to consider continuing as the committee chairperson for another year or start talking to others about taking this position. It is most helpful for the person to have served on the committee before taking on the chairmanship. Look back over the year and evaluate how things have gone and what still needs to be done to complete the year

14. The Spring recognition of new members is a reception after church. New members were introduced during the service and red ribbons were placed on their name tags and they were honored at the reception. An article was in the Beacon the week before listing who was to be honored. The entire church family is invited to bring two dozen cookies per family to help with the reception. Coffee and kool-aid were furnished by the committee.

15. In the month of December, prepare the committee’s report for the annual report which will be printed in early January.
